Winter weather is here on the east coast. While it might feel like you need wool pants to get through some of the cold temperatures we’ve seen lately, you can still style a skirt this winter!

Five Winter Skirt Outfits
Winter skirts can be an essential part of your winter wardrobe if you want them to be. They’re a great option for work outfits, day-to-night looks, and special occasions. There are outfits below, but here are a few tips and thoughts on wearing a skirt when it’s cold.
What Are The Best Skirts For Winter To Be Chic And Warm? Let’s Discuss
Maxi Skirts
Maxi skirts are an obvious option for cold weather because they provide the most coverage. They’re also a little more versatile because you can wear them with tall boots or booties since your skirt is long.
Knit Skirts
Knit skirts are pretty self explanatory for why they’re a good winter option – because they bring a little extra warmth!
Pleated Skirts
Pleated skirts are everywhere again this season! They’ll be more of a closet hero than you might think. Whether you go for a pleated midi skirt or a mini skirt, they’re all perfect for staying chic this winter.
Metallic Skirts
The holiday season is the perfect time to wear a metallic skirt. My pleated metallic skirt that I’m wearing in this post is old from Sezane, but Banana Republic has one that’s nearly identical this year. I love how you can wear this skirt with a neutral sweater, a festive fair isle sweater in red, or just a blouse! You can wear brown boots, black boots, or even green boots like I am. Treat this skirt like a neutral base!
A Few Tips On How To Wear Skirts In Winter
Make Sure Your Boots are tall enough
This is probably obvious, but it’s important to check that your boots are tall enough for your skirt. For midi and maxi skirts, you can get away with some booties, but I still prefer knee high boots for warmth. I always wear knee high boots with mini skirts or anything that’s considered knee length.
Wear a long coat with midi and maxi skirts
If you’re wearing a midi skirt or a maxi skirt, make sure your coat is long enough to cover most of the skirt. This looks super chic, but it will also help keep you warm. Don’t get me wrong, a cropped coat will also look nice – it’s just those in between lengths that don’t go as well with your long skirts. So, go for a long coat or an intentionally cropped coat!
Mini Skirts Work Well With Tall Boots
Mini skirts are definitely an option to wear in the winter. They seem to be having a resurgence in popularity this year! If you live somewhere cold, a mini skirt will look best with tights and knee high boots. I used to love this type of outfit in my 20s, but I think this look is still appropriate even if you’re older. If you live somewhere warm, like Florida, you can pair them with slingbacks or ballet flats.
Five Winter Skirt Outfit Ideas
Metallic Skirt For The Holiday Season
Whether you’re heading to a work Christmas party or need something elevated for Christmas Day, a metallic skirt is the perfect option. You can wear this skirt with boots, heels, or even flats. It’s that versatile. I love how it looks with this brown cardigan, but like I said above, I think it would look so cute with a festive red option, whether you go for a blouse or a sweater. And, if you love a matching set, there’s a matching cardigan!

Knit Skirt That’s Stylish and Warm
This knit skirt is a total dream. The striped version is sold out, but I actually prefer the solid color options, and my favorite is the same color as the sweater I’m wearing. It just goes with everything – from a silk blouse to an oversized sweater. The skirt comes in several other colors too, including navy, black, green, and camel.

Midi Skirt With Sheer Bottom
This midi skirt, which fits a little more like a maxi skirt on me, is a nice option for a fun event or night out. The bottom of the skirt is sheer, so it looks best with knee high boots. I styled it with loafers to walk around London and because I just didn’t have space to pack another pair of boots for my trip! The skirt is a little bit of a chameleon because it will match brown or black boots. I love it with a cozy sweater, but it will look pretty with a cropped leather jacket or even a fun faux fur jacket too. This skirt is a perfectly chic option to wear for all those fun occasions this winter.

Knit Green Skirt
I love knit skirts because they’re such a good option for staying warm in the cold weather. This is such gorgeous green for the season, and you can easily dress it up with a blouse or be cozy with a sweater. Either way, the green skirt adds a little festive touch to your outfit.
Pleated Skirt With A Cozy Jacket
In case you can’t tell, I was super pregnant in this photo. I loved this outfit then, and I love it now. There’s always something fun about mixing different styles together – like an elevated pleated skirt with a casual shirt jacket or sweater. I dressed this entire look up with high heeled boots, but I think it would look nice with Chelsea boots or flat boots as well. I recreated an outfit below that I love with what’s in stock.

I hope you found some outfit ideas for wearing your long skirts this winter! You can also check out my post on how to wear dresses in winter.
