Cute and Comfortable Fall Travel Outfits

Fall is one of the best times of the year for travel, especially for a trip to a city. It’s not too hot to walk all around and it’s nice to avoid the rush of summer travel. Plus, there are so many places in the US and abroad that are especially beautiful in the fall. So, today’s post is all about what you might want in a fall travel wardrobe. If you travel frequently, maybe you want to prioritize a color palette that you can create a travel capsule wardrobe from. Or, you can have one go-to outfit for travel! I’ve included options for both below.

Ten of The Best Fall Travel Outfits For Your Next Trip

A few years ago around this time, I took my first flight and first long haul flight with my baby to London for a fall escape. I was so nervous leading up to the trip. As someone who loves to travel, that is not normally how I operate when it comes to packing and getting ready. But, it was all perfectly fine! I realized that, as a new mom, I wasn’t as focused on what I’d be wearing on the plane. So, it was nice to have an outfit that I could easily pull together for myself once everything was packed for baby.

It can be tricky to know what to wear on a long haul flight, whether you’re traveling solo or traveling with your entire family. I really prioritize comfort, but I don’t want to feel like I’m wearing pajamas. So, I felt inspired to write a blog post about cute travel outfits for the fall season. These outfits work for a plane ride or a road trip.

Chic Travel Outfit

The dream travel outfit is feeling comfortable and looking put together. This feels like the perfect look for a fall getaway. It’s nice to have layers when you travel. I wore this outfit below on the weekend, but I’ve also worn it for travel. You can easily wear this entire look with socks and sneakers or loafers to create more of a fall vibe. Or, if you’re going somewhere warm and want to wear sandals, it works with sandals too!

How To Carry On A Trench Coat Or Other Outerwear

I’m wearing the same pants as above in this outfit too. You can see how they look with loafers, and you can definitely wear this with socks too. This outfit is also is an easy way to travel with a trench coat or another piece of outerwear. I love the neutral tones of this outfit!

Comfortable Fall Travel Outfit For Flying

The jogger pants and pullover I’m wearing below are two of the softest pieces I’ve ever worn, which made them perfect for travel. I can’t even describe to you how soft everything is! It’s like wearing a cloud. They’re seriously so comfortable, and these colors are all perfect for fall. I wear a medium in the pants and a small in the top.

Elevated Loungewear Pieces to Mix & Match

The outfit below is also Varley. And, to that end, this company’s gorgeous pieces can mix and match in so many different ways. You can basically create a fall travel capsule wardrobe out of all the Varley options. Anyway, I didn’t buy these two pieces (very similar top here and pants here) because they didn’t have the right size for me in the pants, but I really love this color. There are tons of colors on the website, and you basically pair anything together – or with jeans when you land! You can even wear ankle boots with these looks!

Matching Set for Long Travel Days

Matching sets are one of my favorite things to wear for any type of travel, but especially for a long drive or a long flight. In fact, matching sets are perfect for a few reasons: they’re comfortable, they’re so easy to plan to wear, and they just look nicer than regular pajamas. If you’re anything like me, you don’t want to have to think about putting an outfit together when you’re checking your packing list at the last minute, and matching sets solve your “what am I going to wear” problem easily.

Matching Set for Long Travel Days

This matching set is currently in my cart in black. These pants look perfectly cozy while still being far more elevated than pajamas. I would wear a thin t-shirt or tank top underneath the cardigan in case you get warm. I love how you can style this cardigan open or buttoned up, so there are options depending on your own personal style. As for shoes, wear these sets with sneakers and cozy cashmere socks for ultra comfort on a long trip! Or, you can wear ballet flats or loafers for an elevated look. You’ll be ready to go as soon as you arrive. This is another outfit that you can layer under a coat – or wear the cardigan with jeans when you arrive.

Wide Leg Linen Pants For Warm Destination Travel

Sometimes, you need an outfit that works for your travel and your full day ahead at your destination! Wide leg linen pants are a go-to for early fall travel days like this (or in general). They’re also perfect if you’re traveling somewhere it will be warm. I wore this outfit for a long, long day! We traveled to Nantucket by boat, spent the day there, and then took the ferry back to the mainland early that evening. I was comfortable all day! If you’re traveling to a place like New England in the early fall, you can still wear linen pants. They look so chic and seasonal with a cotton sweater!

Elevated, Chic Travel Outfit And You Won’t Need To Change

Not every travel day is a long haul trip, and sometimes you want to look nice as soon as you arrive. If you’re looking for an outfit you can travel in, be comfortable, and look put together when you arrive, this type of look is for you. I wore this outfit on a day trip from Maine back to Boston, and it was perfect for spending the day all around Boston. This long sleeve striped button up is so chic, and it comes in tons of different colors and materials. So, you can wear it with this style of trousers, which are also comfortable. The color of pants I’m wearing is sold out, but they’re still available in lots of other colors. They also come in petite!

Knit Pants With A Sweater

These knit pants are basically a flare crop. They’re both comfortable and chic, which makes them perfect for travel. The vertical seam down the middle makes them all the more flattering. I wasn’t wearing them here on a travel day, but this outfit is a good travel day option! You could also go for a longer sweater for ultra comfort. I love to wear these pants with this oversized sweater. You also don’t have to wear nicer flats with this look – these pants look really cute with sneakers too.

Flowy Pants You Can Wear Right Off The Plane, Train, Or Car

I just bought these pants, which remind me of satin pants, but they’re actually made of viscose. They’re really comfortable and don’t cling to you, which is important for a travel day (or any day honestly). I ordered the petite medium, and they fit perfectly. If you’re 5’4 or below, you should definitely go for the petite sizing just for the length alone. Anyway, this material is easy to style because you can wear it with other textures, whether that’s wool, cashmere, or a cotton top.

Cotton Pants You’ll Want To Wear Every Travel Day

I also love these pants in cotton. The stripes are so fun! They’re another pair of pants to consider for fall travel since they’re equally as comfortable as the viscose pair and they don’t scream summer. Plus, you’ll be ready for fall weather – you won’t be cold or too hot. This pair is cotton, so they will also work with so many different fabrics and styles of tops. I’d wear them with a simple t-shirt and a cotton cardigan. Or, you can wear them with an oversized cozy sweater.

If you’re looking for other pieces for the fall, check out my capsule wardrobe blog post. There are several pieces you can pull from those looks for travel outfits as well. A button-up, layering shirt, and sweater coat are also travel essentials and work in so many other ways in your closet! Those are all good options for fall travel looks. If you’re traveling for a work event, a looser-fit sweater dress is something to consider for your travel. You can always add a belt and boots when you arrive! You might find that I avoid pieces like skinny jeans or denim in general for travel, but if you find jeans to be comfortable enough for travel then I would definitely wear them too. I hope you have a perfect fall getaway!
