How to Dress a Black Maxi Skirt

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by. A black maxi skirt is always a good closet staple because you can style most of them for different seasons. I love anything that’s an option to wear all year! Black maxi skirts in general are really versatile in that way. It’s the perfect outfit base to create a stylish look, whether you are dressing it up for work or a special occasion, or just wearing it casually.

Are Maxi Skirts In Style

Yes! Maxi skirts never seem to go out of style. There are different types of black maxi skirts, and all of them are a great base piece that you can add your own personal style touches to. I love the style of the one I’m wearing because an a-line skirt is flattering on my shape, but you might prefer a fitted knit maxi skirt, a flowy linen skirt, or a satin maxi skirt. I’ve also linked a bunch right here that I love.

Are Maxi Skirts Business Casual?

Yes, maxi skirts are fine to wear in a business casual office. It’s all about how you style it, but business casual typically gives you a lot more flexibility than a formal dress code. You can wear a maxi skirt with flats or loafers to make it feel more like a work outfit and less like a special occasion outfit. A blouse and belt will look cute with it, and so will an elevated t-shirt under a cropped jacket or blazer.

What To Wear With Black Maxi Skirts

Maxi skirts are really versatile, so there isn’t a lot that you can’t wear with them. I’m 5’4, and I find they’re pretty flattering on me even though I’m on the shorter side! If you’re worried that the skirt will shorten you because of your height, try out a high waisted maxi skirt. Anyway, here are a few top pieces that come to mind that I love to wear with maxi skirts that I think you might too.

Work Blouse

A black maxi skirt is appropriate for nearly every office dress code I can think of. You can even wear this in a formal work environment with a work blouse and a blazer or cardigan over it. I always love how baby blue button ups look with black – it helps soften a work outfit!

Denim Jacket

A black maxi skirt matches a lot of different styles of denim jackets, so it’s easy to throw on the style that compliments you the best, and you have a complete look. Layer your denim jacket over a tank top, t-shirt, or button up.

Suede Jacket or Leather Jacket

These are my go-to jackets for spring and fall. They’re a little edgy and always chic. I love how they’ll never go out of style, and you can wear them with skirts, jeans, over a dress, and with work pants.

This is the exact jacket I’m wearing, but it’s a different brown. I styled it here with a maxi skirt as well!

Linen Top

As you can see in one of my outfits below, linen tops are an easy choice to style with maxi skirts. The style of the shirt can range from a classic linen t-shirt to something slightly more polished like a vest.

Blazer

Use a blazer to enhance your waist or make you feel more confident about your midsection – I love to do this. A cropped blazer with a high waisted skirt will help elongate your legs, while a classic fit blazer is perfect to help avoid bringing attention to your midsection. I love how both look – it’s all about what makes you feel the most confident!

Oversized Sweater

I love how an oversized sweater looks with a maxi skirt. You can get away with pretty much any type of shoe depending on the season. I love a linen or cotton skirt with a cotton sweater for the spring, fall, and even cool summer nights. When it’s cold, a pair of boots is the most natural choice because it makes the entire outfit feel cozy.

This type of outfit looks best with a more fitted or slim cut skirt like a slip skirt to balance out the oversized fit of the sweater.

Black Maxi Skirt Outfit Ideas: How To Style A Black Maxi Skirt

Here are several outfit ideas for how to style a black maxi skirt throughout the year.

This is one of my favorite outfits for fall, and you can wear it all the way through spring! I love how this outfit works with different black maxi skirts, whether you have a cotton one, a slip skirt, a linen skirt.

Linen Top With Black Maxi Skirt

Linen is the perfect material to wear with a cotton skirt when it’s warm outside. Both fabrics are breathable, so you won’t be too hot. This linen vest is one of my favorite summer tops to wear with this skirt, but the top also looks nice with linen pants or jeans. Who doesn’t love versatility!

Velvet Maxi Skirt For The Winter And Holiday Season

A velvet maxi skirt is the perfect skirt to wear throughout the holidays, but you can wear it all winter too. You can style the skirt for a party outfit, but it also works with a blazer or tweed jacket if you want to wear it to work. Lastly, style it with a cozy sweater for a ski trip or just a cold brunch with friends where you want to get dressed up. There are still a lot of outfit options with velvet into January.

Versatile Black Linen Maxi Skirt

On the other end of the weather forecast, I love linen so much for warm weather! A black linen maxi skirt is one of those pieces you’ll be able to wear effortlessly throughout the spring, summer, and the fall. You can style it with lots of different tops and shoes, whether you’re putting together an outfit for work or the weekend.

I love how this skirt works with a fun top for a night out. And, you can also style it for work – try a button up with a black cotton sweater draped over your shoulders. I linked both the regular and petite lengths. I’m 5’4, and I typically buy petite length from Reformation in skirts, and they always hit perfectly!

How To Style Long Skirts In Summer

Choose Lightweight Materials for Your Skirt

Linen and cotton are the best options for summer maxi skirts because they’re natural and breathable fabrics. They won’t make you sweat like polyester will. And, since your skirt is long, you want to make sure the fabrics aren’t making you hot!

Style With Summer Shoes

Slingback shoes, sandals, espadrilles, ballet flats, or even sneakers are all shoes you can wear with a maxi skirt in the summer – it just depends on where you’re going. For a dressier outfit, go with slingback shoes, sandals, or even espadrilles that have a heel. However, woven flats like this pair can also be dressy! If you’re wearing a casual outfit, you can really go with any of these! I’m sharing more on what shoes to wear with a black maxi skirt below.

You Can Wear A Sweater

There’s nothing better than cool nights at the beach during the summer, and if you’re like me, you might need long sleeves to help avoid mosquito bites. So, a cotton sweater is perfect to style with a maxi skirt when it’s warm. I especially love the look of an oversized sweater with a linen skirt like this one.

What Shoes To Wear With Maxi Skirts

Combat Boots Or Chunky Boots

Combat boots add a fun edge to any outfit, and I love how you can style them with more feminine pieces like a maxi skirt.

While I’m wearing combat boots with my black maxi skirt in the photo above, you can really wear most shoes with a maxi skirt. I’ve worn this skirt in the middle of the summer with sandals, sneakers, and slingback shoes. I wore it in the fall with loafers and ballet flats, and I’m planning to wear it through the winter with all different types of boots.

Slingback Shoes

Slingbacks are perfect for summer, especially if you’re traveling or in the city. They are chic, protect your toes better than sandals, and typically pretty comfortable. Honestly, I also love them when the weather is moving from spring to summer and I just haven’t had a chance to get a pedicure yet.

Espadrilles

Espadrilles are a go-to summer shoe option for me. I love how they protect my feet when I’m running around the city, but they’re also cute enough to wear on a beach vacation. If I wear heels in the summer, I tend to go for espadrille heels these days too.

Kitten Heel Shoes

Kitten heels or booties with a low heel are a nice alternative to pumps because they achieve the same elevated feel. I used to love high heels in college, ha, but I really hate them now! They’re just not practical for my life. So, I typically turn to a lower heel to help my outfit feel dressier.
