How To Wear A Turtleneck

Turtlenecks are one of the most versatile cold-weather staples. They can transition from fall to winter to spring effortlessly. A turtleneck is a great option for work as well as date night! It’s all about choosing the right fit and fabric, layering strategically, and choosing polished accessories.

Are Turtlenecks In Style All Year?

You can wear turtlenecks pretty much all year, but if you’re on the east coast or in the south in the US, you probably want to pack them away for summer. In general, turtlenecks are always in style. You see them everywhere when it comes to fashion, including runways and on social media. They may cycle through being on trend, but they never leave a classic wardrobe.

How To Wear Turtlenecks On Different Occasions

Remember your accessories

Turtleneck outfits without accessories can feel a little stiff. Be sure to wear earrings, a necklace, a brooch, a silk scarf, add a fun belt to your outfit, or a combination of these things. I don’t always have time to do this, but it’s always my goal!

Layering without feeling bulky

No matter where you’re going in a turtleneck, no one wants to feel bulky. So, go for a sleeveless turtleneck or a fitted turtleneck if you’re using the turtleneck to add a layer of warmth to your outfit. The fabric from the turtleneck around your neck and core will help you stay warm.

If you wear a normal, long sleeve turtleneck under a jacket, just make sure it’s not an oversized fit turtleneck. And, make sure the jacket or blazer isn’t too fitted, especially in the sleeves. This will help avoid feeling bulky. It’s helpful just to try them on together, honestly. Merino wool pieces typically have a closer fit than cotton and even some cashmere, but it really depends on the turtleneck.

Styling a turtleneck for work

This is an easy way to get dressed for work when it’s cold. Any style of turtleneck, whether it’s an oversized turtleneck sweater or a sleeveless turtleneck you’re wearing under a blazer, works for the office. I love how an oversized turtleneck sweater looks with a slip skirt. You can wear the turtleneck untucked – it’s comfortable and chic.

Choose a more fitted turtleneck for a night out

There’s nothing better than being warm on a cold night out. I love to wear a fitted turtleneck when I’m heading out with friends or going out for date night when it’s cold outside. They look so chic tucked into a skirt or just a pair of jeans.

Neutral turtleneck jacket and with a fun skirt

A neutral turtleneck will go a long way in your closet. A neutral turtleneck and skirt is perfect for everything from work to Valentine’s Day.

Neutral turtleneck, jacket with a fun skirt

As far as outfit formulas go, this is an easy one. I just took a neutral turtleneck and paired it with a fun skirt. I layered with this suede jacket, which works perfectly for fall and spring. This outfit will also look super cute with knee high boots. I love how the brown accessories are all slightly different colors but work together seamlessly.

Here are some other skirts I’d wear with a turtleneck if you’re putting together a work outfit. Don’t shy away from a fun skirt for work. It’s totally appropriate, especially if you style it with a neutral turtleneck.

Turtleneck with wide leg corduroys

This was the perfect outfit for a day in the English countryside, but it’s also a great option for work. You can add layers as necessary. This faux sherpa vest, which I live in, is the best cozy detail for your outfit. Or, wear this cropped leather jacket for an edgier look. These corduroys come in several colors so there’s a pair that will work with just about every closet. They are honestly so comfortable!

Sleeveless turtleneck as a layer

I’ve written extensively about this sleeveless cashmere mockneck sweater. It works with everything – from button ups to blazers or jeans to work pants. And, it’s an amazing price point for cashmere.

A sleeveless turtleneck is actually really easy to style under a v-neck or crewneck with long sleeves too. My exact sleeveless sweater is the same mockneck I’m wearing above. I love how it doesn’t have a super high neck, so it’s not overwhelming to wear or style.

Another effortless way to style a sleeveless turtleneck is to layer it under a statement jacket. This suede jacket is a great example! It instantly elevates your outfit, and this whole outfit is comfortable and polished. You can easily wear this to work with a skirt or work trousers instead of jeans.
