Autumn Outfit Ideas for Women
Layers, loafers, boots, versatile outerwear, and seasonal colors are all essential to autumn outfits. You can use layering techniques and transitional shoes to adapt your outfits to changing temperatures and occasions throughout the season without needing a new wardrobe. I also love to combine closet staples, such as jeans or work trousers or a skirt, with new seasonal pieces – like a new cozy sweater.
How to Build Stylish Autumn Outfits
Layers Are Key
Layers and versatile outerwear are the key to fall outfits. In the early fall, I love to layer a t-shirt under a lightweight jacket. Once it gets colder, you can layer a sweater under the same jacket.
Trench coats are also perfect for autumn outfits, whether you style your trench over jeans or a nice dress.
Build Your Look Around Core Pieces and Add Fun Accessories
Base pieces are essential to fall outfits and putting together a fall capsule wardrobe – if that’s your goal. These are the core pieces of your fall wardrobe, such as jeans, work pants, a skirt, a dress, versatile shoes, and key tops and sweaters. For me, core pieces are definitely jeans, button ups, and loafers. I just always go back to them! You can add in seasonal trends to add polish to your base outfit, such as a statement jacket or a colorful scarf.

Mix Textures and Shades of The Same Color
One of the best thing about autumn outfits is how you can mix textures and wear the same color in different shades. Tonal outfits are always in style.
Ten Autumn Outfits for Different Occasions
From classic autumn outfits with fine knits to outfits built around trench coats, there’s something for everywhere you’re going this autumn.
Yellow Sweater and Edgy Barrel Pants for Weekends or Fall Trips

This yellow sweater was immediately a wardrobe staple for me. Despite the fact that it’s a bright, warm yellow, it’s actually easy to style! I love it with these green barrel pants for a fairly casual outfit, but it also looks good with denim, work trousers, or a skirt. I love how it looks with neutral shoes, such as brown boots or tan loafers.
If you style this sweater for work, I’d consider wearing this gorgeous silk blouse underneath and letting the collar show out of the top of your sweater. You can see what I mean in the next outfit, where I styled the blouse with a black sweater.
Trench coats are one of my favorite pieces of fall outerwear. They’re perfect for the days when you want a little something over your outfit, but you aren’t ready for a winter coat. I’m wearing my favorite trench below.
My sweater also comes in a bright blue and a classic navy.
Autumn Capsule Wardrobe Blouse and Jeans for Casual Friday and Weekend Brunch
A good pair of jeans, a blouse, a black sweater, and a pair of versatile boots are the definition of an autumn capsule wardrobe outfit. This silk blouse adds a polished touch to any outfit. I love to wear it with edgier pieces like a black sweater and Chelsea boots or under a sherpa vest. It’s really the perfect work blouse too!

Versatile Corduroys and A Classic Turtleneck for Work or Cozy Trips
Basics will never fail you! You can wear my outfit to work or you can wear it on vacation like I did. I spent the day exploring the Cotswolds, and I was comfortable, warm, and felt like my outfit was polished but not overdone.
Autumn Skirt for Work or Special Occasions
This outfit just feels autumnal. It’s one of those outfits I’d wear to the office on the days I know I have plans after work.
My skirt is old, but I recreated this outfit with a similar skirt from Sezane. You can style everything in the outfit the same, or you can wear this outfit with boots. I love how it’s versatile enough to wear on the warmer days of autumn and the colder days.
The Outfit to Wear Anywhere: Fun Pop of Color Cardigan and Barrel Jeans
Any pair of jeans and a blue sweater, whether it’s a bright blue or classic navy, is a classic outfit for autumn. I love how this looks for a casual office with loafers. You could also wear the cardigan open with a simple tee underneath and a belt for the weekend.

Trench Coats Can Be The Outfit
Trench coats are the best fall coats because they’re so versatile. I love the one I have because you can truly wear it with anything. It looks chic over a matching loungewear set for school pickup, and it’s perfect over an elevated casual outfit in London too.

Classic Base Outfit: Dark Denim and Brown T-Shirt
There’s nothing better than a classic base outfit that you can wear by itself or layer. When it’s colder, you can easily style a jacket or cardigan over this simple tee, and you can wear boots too. I love how you can dress this up or down, so it’s an outfit that you can wear to work or for a simple coffee date. In the next outfit, you can see how I styled a statement jacket over the t-shirt.

Statement Jacket for Work, Weekend, or Special Trips
If you’re looking for a fun jacket you can wear to work or on the weekend, this is it! You’ll typically find blazers and jackets in neutral colors in my closet, but I am so excited I added this statement jacket to my wardrobe. It pairs perfectly with any shade of brown, so I didn’t need to buy anything to go with it and that’s why I knew it worked for me!
Colorful Sweater for Neutral Lovers
This type of cardigan is super easy to style, which makes it a good option for autumn outfits on the weekend or work. You can style it up with a blouse underneath or wear it with just a tank top under it like I am below. This was my look for a busy day with family.
This style of cardigan is also perfect for the office! I love how it looks with navy pants for work, whether you’re wearing trendier barrel pants or tailored trousers.
Because you can wear the type of the cardigans I shared below for the office or the weekend, they’re actually great options for an autumn capsule wardrobe even though they’re a unique color! I’m wearing the Sophie cardigan, but I’ve seen the others and love them as well.
Dark Denim Outfit
Dark denim is a great option for casual work dress codes or a casual Friday in a business casual dress code! I love how dark denim jeans look with a button up and a sleeveless cashmere sweater like I’m wearing below. It’s really just an outfit made up of a bunch of fall staples that would be part of a fall capsule wardrobe.

I recreated my outfit below.
How to Make Your Autumn Wardrobe More Versatile
My focus on autumn outfits and all autumn clothing in general is typically around versatility. For example, I prioritize sweaters that are made of warm, natural materials and they have to be a piece I know I’ll wear a lot. The material matters because it will actually keep me warm and these items will last longer even though I’ll wear them more than once a week.
Here are a few tips on maximizing the pieces you own or buy for fall!
Wear Sweaters With More Than Just Pants
A good sweater is a wardrobe staple that you should be able to wear with jeans, trousers, skirts, and even over a dress. Basically, you should be able to get multiple outfits with one sweater – no matter what color it is!
Style Your Button Ups in Different Ways
Button ups can be a main part of your outfit, whether you’re building a fall capsule wardrobe or just have one in your closet for work. My favorite thing about wearing a button up in the fall is you can style it in so many ways! I love to wear mine over a sleeveless or fitted turtleneck sweater, but I wear it in a classic way too – just tucked into jeans or a skirt.
Don’t Purchase Pieces That Aren’t Versatile
I always think about what I already own that I can wear with something before I buy it. It’s important to me to not buy something that requires me to buy something else to wear it when it comes to my daily outfits or pieces that feel like they’re part of a fall capsule wardrobe. Of course, there are always exceptions for special pieces or if I want a special outfit for a trip!
Okay, I hope I’ve helped you with some autumn outfits for wherever you’re going. The best part about most of these outfits is they’re meant to be versatile. You can wear them to different places and for different occasions even if you just need to change a small part of the look, such as different shoes.
