The 4th of July is always a fun occasion to dress in different variations of red, white, and blue. Whether you’re getting dressed for an outdoor celebration or a long day in the heat, there is a natural expectation for festive dressing. I always find myself doing more than one thing on the 4th of July. So, Independence Day feels like it calls for outfits that feel comfortable, breathable, and easy to wear across multiple settings.

Outfits for the 4th of July are all about balancing festive summer style with real-world comfort. The best outfits feel light, breathable, and easy to wear. But, they obviously incorporate patriotic colors in some way! I like to focus on fabrics that align with the occasion and temperature. So, linen and cotton are always good options. And, honestly, they’re good options for July outfits in general!

What To Wear For 4th Of July
There are so many different outfits for the 4th of July, and it all depends on what you’re doing. I typically change once on the 4th, whether it’s from the pool to a cookout or from an afternoon cookout to a nicer dinner. But, I love options that you can wear all day, so I included some of those outfit ideas below!
Flag Sweater
Independence Day is the occasion for a flag sweater. It’s the perfect combination of red, white, and blue. There are also so many flag sweaters that come in neutral colors, so they feel a little more elevated.
Summer Dress
If you’re looking for a cute 4th of July outfit that doesn’t require a lot of styling, a summer dress is always a good idea. You can almost always find a chic summer dress in festive colors, too. Click here for a whole blog post on cute dresses for 4th of July. The dresses below are my favorites right now.
Linen Pants
Linen pants are everywhere this time of the year. I love them for 4th of July outfits because you can easily dress them up or down. You can wear them to the pool, to the beach, a cookout, or a festive dinner. I love how you can style them with a sweater or a tank top – or both!

These three linen pants are the pair I wear all the time.
Linen Shorts
I recently bought these linen shorts and I’m in love! They’re such a good option for outdoor 4th of July outfits where you’ll be at the pool, beach, or running around with your kids. Their length makes them practical, and I just love how comfortable they are. They come in white, brown, and navy.
Lightweight jeans
These lightweight jeans are a total dream if you’re a denim lover like me. I wore them throughout the day when it was in the 90s and I didn’t feel like they made me any hotter than I already was, ha. Wear them with a festive tank top or a simple t-shirt with fun accessories. These will be perfect for New England summer nights.
4th Of July Outfits
Linen Skirt and Stripe Button Up
This is the type of outfit you can wear from breakfast to fireworks. This stripe button up is perfect for the 4th of July, and it also works for July outfits in general because it keeps you cool. Linen on linen is always a good idea for Independence Day since July brings such warm temperatures.
I also linked a belt with seashell medallions that I think is so fun for summer!
Red Linen Skirt with Simple Tee
This same skirt comes in a gorgeous bright red, which is also perfect to wear on the 4th. I love how you can rewear both of these skirts throughout the summer. I’d style the bright red skirt with a simple tank top, a fun t-shirt, or a plain t-shirt. Then, just fun jewelry. How cute is this fish shirt!
White Shift Dress
A white mini shift dress is perfect as a base outfit. You can wear it as is, or you can add festive accessories. My exact dress is old from Loft, but this one from Quince looks the same. I wear Quince linen, and I love it! This dress comes in a few other festive options, too.
The first three are the Quince linen dress, and I also love the other two dresses from J.Crew.
Gingham Dress
This gingham dress is perfect to wear on the 4th! I wore it during our beach trip as a coverup, as well as for lunch and dinner. This dress comes in tons of prints and colors, but the gingham options are a 100 percent cotton option that dry super fast.
It’s easy to dress up with espadrille heels, but it also looks chic with flat sandals. This year’s color option is a different blue, but I think it’s still a great option for the fourth of July.
Flag Sweater and Linen Shorts
This flag sweater has been on my list ever since I saw it in store. It’s a gorgeous chocolate brown – I love how you don’t have to wear a bright red or blue if that’s just not your thing. This is perfect for summers in New England, where I have family.
This clay color t-shirt is a good option to wear with white linen shorts to keep cool, but you can easily style the sweater and linen shorts with a simple white tee or tank top.
Chic Dress: Elevated 4th of July Outfit Idea
I’ve been obsessed with this dress since it came out, and the color is perfect for the 4th of July. It’s just such a cute 4th of July outfit! It comes with this fun belt, and I also love the idea of styling a seashell scarf around the waist. Click here to shop this outfit.
